State Sen. Gil Kahele died this morning, his family confirmed. He was 73.

Kahele, a Democrat, represented the Hilo area since 2011.

Last week he was hospitalized and missed the opening of the 2016 legislative session. His family had told the Tribune-Herald the senator hoped to return to work this week.

Rep. Clift Tsuji, also a Hilo Democrat, said Kahele’s family notified his office early this morning.

“He was a great senator but also a great individual and a close friend,” he said.
